How do we encourage men to use the unique local health trainers service?

Health Trainers are local people who have been employed and trained to provide services within their own community, targeting patients with high lifestyle risk factors. Their role is to provide a personal service to motivate, encourage and support local people to make changes to improve their health.

NHS Walsall has been one of the first organisations in the country to employ a team of health trainers.

The target group the service was looking for increased uptake from was men aged 40+.

Graphic Designer Innes Jones was commissioned to design and produce new and eye catching marketing material for Walsall’s developing service. Consultation was undertaken to inform the designs and sessions were carried out with existing service users, local men via Walsall Banks Stadium (the home of Walsall football club, town centre events, Health Trainer staff and community groups.

Through consultation work insight was gathered around men’s current lifestyle behaviour, barriers to accessing the service, personal motivations and perceptions to health and marketing styles, formats and concept.

A series of flyers, posters and display panels have been produced and are used widely across the borough at public events to promote the service.
